In order to make a right career decision, it is important to plan your career path considering all the important factors. Choosing a career path is extremely important and can well be a life changing step. Therefore, it needs a thorough brainstorming. Good thing is that you can turn your dreams into a reality by following a systematic yet flexible approach. Following are few guidelines that can help you in bringing your career on the right track:

- Career planning should start at a very initial stage, i.e. during the school-level education. It’s the duty of parents to educate their children about the importance of education and career. This will help the children being mentally prepared to handle the job related pressure at later stages. Children need to be matured enough to explore their options and proactively learn about the career paths aligned with their interests.

- You can take career guidance from a well qualified career planner. The career planners inform you about all the available career options as per your educational qualifications. They also consider your ability as well as interests while short-listing the career options suitable for you. They also analyze the market and emerging trends, and can provide you with details about all the prospective career options, which can help you frame a rewarding career for yourself.

- You should not completely rely on anyone’s advice regardless of how close they might be to you. They might be your well-wishers but chances are they aren’t aware of the possible career options you can opt. It’s always better to keep yourself updated with the latest trends and career options available as suitable for your line of education.

- Performing sufficient study and research about the company and your work profile before you join a company. You should learn about your prospective roles and responsibilities before you join the organization.

- Relying on any placement agency that guarantees a job and asks you to pay for it is simply worthless. Reputed placement agencies are paid for their efforts by the employers.

- It is also important to remain employed with one employer for a long duration. Most of the reputed companies avoid employing people who have switched their jobs very frequently without good reasons.

As mentioned earlier, a systematic career planning considering all the possible options and opportunities definitely pays off. It will not only educate you about the ongoing trends in the market, but also will help you to increase your marketability in the line of career you’ve chosen for yourself.

Are you looking for a new job? Are you a smart phone owner who loves to download free applications? If so, you may want to closely examine job search apps for smart phones, such as the iPhone or Android phones. First and foremost, it is important to mention that you will find a variance among the programs offered. Lets say that you have an Android phone; if you visit the Android marketplace, you will find multiple job search apps to choose from. Each of these applications is likely to have their own unique features, as well as their own pros and cons.

Job search apps for smart phone enable you to find current job listings online. How you find jobs depends on the programs in question. For example, some applications only let you search job listings that were uploaded to their website. On the other hand, you will find applications that let you search across the internet for jobs. You will often be asked to provide a search word or phrase, a zip code, and a location to search. It is recommended that you search with the job title, your zip code, and a distance of how far you are willing to travel to and from work. Your application might search through listings from the internet as a whole or listing that were uploaded to that site only. Either way, you receive job listings through the use of keyword searching. What happens is that you enter in a keyword phrase, such as a job title. The application will then search through the jobs posted online and connect you with listings where your search word or phrase was used.

All in all, smart phone applications that enable you to find job listings online are similar to traditional job search websites. The only true difference is that these applications are designed for compact smart phone screens. And you now know how job search applications for smart phones work. Are you in need of a job? Do you prefer to search the internet via your phone, as opposed to your computer? If so, what are you waiting for? Visit your phone’s app store and examine the great selection of job search tools today. You will be pleasantly surprised to see that most of these applications are free!

Job fairs offer you an opportunity to talk to the people in the know. Employers are just waiting to answer your questions. It’s easy to get caught up in the crowds and the confusion. You move from booth to booth picking up a lot of fancy brochures, but with a lack of a clear impression on which employer has the right opportunity for your career. Here’s how to improve your job hunting results when you attend a job fair.

Making the most of a job fair means planning your strategy before you enter the building. If possible, through the internet or job fair advertisements, find out which employers will be exhibiting at the job fair. Choose those organizations that you may have an interest in. Check out their web sites or do some research at the library.

Look over the floor plan of the job fair. Mark out those employers that you have an interest in and plan the most efficient way to visit each one. This way you’ll be able to spend more time with those that interest you rather than wandering throughout the entire job fair. With time left over browse the other employers, you never know when you may come upon something that interests you.

Write out a list of questions to ask the employer’s representatives. Try to put together a list of questions specific to each employer. If the information is already on the web site, don’t waste your time trying to stump the employer’s representative. Look for information on the organization’s work place culture, future plans and career progressions. If the particular employer has no openings that fit your skills and career plan ask for referrals. The employer’s representatives are in the recruiting business and may be aware of other openings that fit your skill levels and job requirements. Get the name of the representative and their phone number and email address.

Take notes of each conversation. You will be talking to so many people that your notes will help you later if you elect to follow-up with a specific employer. If possible, don’t just drop off a resume. Get a copy of the job announcement, and with the information learned at the job fair, draft a specific cover letter, with appropriate changes in your resume, and then mail the application packet to the employer. This way your cover letter and resume will closely fit the announced needs of the employer. Your chances of getting a favorable decision to advance to the next step just went up.

Many job fairs have informational workshops. Check the schedule on all the workshops and make sure to attend all that are of interest. Be prepared to ask general job hunting questions at these workshops. They are generally a good source of job hunting strategies, especially if seem stuck in a job hunting rut.

At the end of the job fair, you’ll have a briefcase full of information, and hopefully a number of employers that have job openings that fit your skill set. If anyone helped give you a possible job referral send them a thank you note. Begin immediately writing appropriate cover letters and redrafted your resume to submit for possible job openings.

Would you want to be ready for a great career quickly? Do you feel that the courses offered by the traditional colleges are uninteresting? Whether your preference lies in doing hands on work than reading books? Are you interested in going for a cost effective program?

If the answers are ‘yes’ then you should opt for a degree from any of the available online career colleges.

Definition of online career colleges: Online career colleges are those which are known for offering degrees or certificate programs which would let you have a career in your field of interest such as art, accounting, computer, healthcare, media, interior design and many more.

Advantages of studying in online career colleges

There are various advantages of studying in online career colleges and these are:

a) Maintaining both work and study together: If you are a full time employee then you might not be interested in going back to the classroom again and lose your salary; the online career colleges are therefore the ideal choices for you because they do not require your physical presence and you can study as well as carry on with your professional duties.

b) Opportunity of spending time with your family: If you enroll in an online career college, then you can study while sitting in the comfort of your room while enjoying yourself with your family members.

c) New curriculum, interactive classes: It takes lots of time for a traditional career college to adopt a new curriculum but this is not the case with the online career colleges. Therefore by enrolling in an online career college you can learn latest concepts and findings immediately

d) More student interaction: The classes of the online career colleges are mostly interactive and therefore you are free to interact with all the students who are present globally and know their views as well as express your own views. In this way you can gather valuable information regarding your area of study

e) Getting the help of expert faculties: The faculties that you get in these online career colleges are always experts in their own fields. In these online career colleges you might get the opportunity of having the guidance of an expert researcher in your field, attending whose class was a dream of yours.

f) Learn in your own speed: No matter what type of a learner you are; slow, average or fast, in a traditional career college you have to go with the pace of the other students. But in any online career college you are given the advantage of learning at your own pace. If you feel like you can go through the study materials as many times as you want.

g) No need to drop a class for handling business emergencies: This is the biggest advantage of any online career college. You do not need to drop a class if you are stuck in the office attending an important meeting. You can log onto your online career college at any time you feel like.

All these advantages have made online career colleges the places where people flock to get a certificate in any career enhancing course.

The focus today is on acquiring multiple skills and cross functionality, and not on specialization. With proper career planning, we can avoid dead end jobs. It helps us to focus on our positive and negative traits.

Planning your career basically starts after the secondary level of education. After a certain level of education, we have to decide on our careers, to be able to pursue higher education that will help us to secure good job opportunities.

Advantages

Career planning helps to pave a secure path. For example, if a person wants to become a banker, they have to possess a Bachelor’s degree in finance. Preplanning can help us achieve our educational targets effectively and also helps us to evaluate our personality. In short, career planning is necessary to guide us towards a proper and safer future.

Without proper planning, we may find ourselves lost – it will also be difficult to find the job we want in the future. It motivates and drives us to accomplish the task.

A well-planned career helps us to achieve our goals and dreams. As time passes by, we grow and our needs change. Therefore, to keep pace with the future, we need to plan well ahead. It helps us to make many adjustments along the way as we keep learning throughout our lives. Successful people are those who have adopted proper career planning.

Mentors and guides play a pivotal role in this. It is an important aspect of our lives, but we should not put too much pressure on ourselves, as that would probably discourage us from making any real, profitable choices.

The job interview was a success and now it comes down to the final process before the employer decides on hiring you; the employment reference check. It is important to be prepared since strong job references can sometimes be a deciding factor in getting a job offer or being passed over for another shortlisted candidate. Here are some keys to providing successful job references:

Forget the letter: Employers have no interest in reading an informal reference letter written in the past. Letters do not have credibility, since anyone can write them for you. Employers want to be able to contact and communicate with a real person who can speak about your strengths and weakness and fit for the job you are seeking via the phone.

Leave references off your resume: References should be on a separate sheet and not on your resume. Never give references to employers until they are requested. Be sure to keep a list of at least 3-5 updated references with you when attending the job interview so that you can be prepared to present them to the employer if requested. Adding the line “References available upon request” at the bottom of your resume is a good way to let potential employers know that you have a ready list of references.

Choose your references carefully: Choose references that will make the strongest recommendations for you. It is always best to choose former managers or supervisors who you reported to over co-workers since they are taken in higher regard by employers. References that know all your accomplishments, strengths and abilities provide the most positive choice.

References do not have to be employment related: Ideally you want to use work related references if possible, but if you are a student or have a hard time finding 3-5 work references feel free to contact: former professors, co-workers, customers or acquaintances you know through volunteer work or organizations. These references should be individuals who can speak highly of your accomplishments, work ethic, skills, education, etc. Avoid using family members or friends.

Get permission: Before listing someone as your reference, be sure to ask for their permission and ask if they are comfortable. The last thing you want is to have an employer call a reference on your list without them being aware. This will not look good in the eyes of the employer and could lead to a poor or incomplete reference check.

Ensure contact information is current: Get current and complete information from each reference: full name, current title, company name, business address, and contact information (email address and phone numbers).

Keep your references informed: Once you provide an employer with a list, make sure each reference is contacted and given a “heads-up” that they may be contacted by the employer. Provide the references with information about the company, position you have applied for, and who may be contacting them. The references will be aware and anticipate the phone call. You may also choose to send the references a copy of your most current resume so they can refer to the resume during the call.

Thank your references for their help: As a common courtesy always thank your references for their help regardless if the employer contacts them or not. The best references are those you keep in touch with on a regular basis, since you may have to use them a few times during your job search.

Good References are a critical part of any job search and can help you secure that perfect job. They provide a potential employer with information about your past work history, your skills, and abilities.
